Requirements to Become a Locksmith

March 14, 2020

Locksmiths offer a wide variety of essential services to homeowners, business owners and vehicle owners. From key cutting to lock repair and replacement, these professionals specialize in handling a range of services to ensure the accessibility and safety of residential and commercial properties and vehicles.

While the basic process of opening a lock or making a new key may seem pretty straightforward on the surface, many of the services most frequently completed by professional locksmiths are actually pretty technical and complex. For this reason, it’s important that locksmiths are able to meet certain requirements in order to perform these tasks properly for their customers. Keep reading to find out more about the requirements for locksmith certification in Houston, TX.

Licensing requirements

Locksmiths must meet requirements set by state agencies to acquire a license and provide services to customers. In the state of Texas, the Regulatory Services Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety is responsible for developing licensing and certification standards that locksmiths must meet and maintain. Before becoming a locksmith, an applicant must pass a complete background check to qualify for training and licensing through the state.

Testing

After passing a complete background check, locksmiths must pass a certification course, put in hours at a locksmith trade school and work under the supervision of a qualified locksmith for at least a year. In some cases, locksmiths have the option of completing a two-year internship as an alternative route to certification.

Regardless of which option a locksmith chooses, locksmiths must pass a federal background check after completing their hours. Next, they must take an exam to test their knowledge of best practices and locksmithing procedures. Upon completing and passing this exam, the Regulatory Services Division reviews the applicant’s education and employment history and issues a locksmith certification.

Insurance and continuing education

Even licensed locksmiths are still subject to ongoing requirements. To keep insurance and licenses current, locksmiths must complete regular continuing education coursework. This continuing education must be completed annually by locksmiths to renew licenses and maintain insurance. By completing this coursework, locksmiths stay up to date on changes to best practices and updated locksmithing technology with which industry professionals should be familiar.
