Where Can I Get a New/Extra/Replacement Key for My Subaru?
Over the years, Subaru has offered reliable cars that have developed a strong following. Many of their models stay on the road for years, so replacing their keys can be a lesson in different methods for different model years.
If your Subaru was built prior to 2003, chances are that your vehicle key does not include an immobilizer chip, so you will just need to duplicate a standard metal key. This can be as simple as taking your key to a hardware store or locksmith that has Subaru blanks. If your provider doesn’t have them, Nissan blanks may work as well, but if you are set on having a Subaru logo on your key you may find blanks at online retailers, like eBay. The process of cutting the key usually takes less than 20 minutes and is relatively inexpensive.
For Subaru models manufactured after 2003, if there is a blinking red dashboard light that comes on when your key is out of the ignition, but the car is not locked, this indicates the presence of immobilizer technology. You can choose to go to your local Subaru dealership for replacement or duplication, but you will pay more. You can buy an off-brand fob online, then take it to a dealership or locksmith to program it, but check with your dealership first. Consumer Reports states in their research that many aftermarket (or off-brand) fobs will not work for Subaru replacements. Express Locksmith in the Houston area is authorized to duplicate and replace Subaru key fobs, so call us to see if we can help you.
If your Subaru is less than five years old, going to a dealership may be required. Because more recent models have a high level of technical sophistication the only solution to replace key fobs is to work with your dealership and pay the price they require. Make sure you work with your dealer to get the cost of a duplicate or replacement fob cost covered by your vehicle warranty if appropriate. If you are replacing a lost key, you may be able to have all or part of the cost reimbursed by your insurance company or roadside assistance program. You may also have to tow your car to the dealership.
If you’re in the Houston area, give us a call to see if we can replace your Subaru key and/or fob.
